Fyne Audio loudspeakers

Fyne were founded in 2017 by experienced speaker designers who had worked for many years for another well-known British manufacturer. Therefore, the company was infused with lots of industry expertise from the beginning, allowing them to hit the ground running. Over the years, they have developed a reputation for well-made, high-performance loudspeakers.

The technology within their line is interesting. With the exception of their entry level range which are more conventional designs, all have Fyne’s IsoFlare™ driver. This is a coaxial arrangement with the tweeter in the centre of the mid-woofer with shared acoustic centre. The main advantage of this is time alignment of these two drivers as they emanate from a single point source. This means they have a wide stereo dispersion, so an excellent soundstage is achieved in locations in the listening room where other brands may not. Fyne’s Technical Director, Dr Paul Mills, has been designing coaxial drivers for many years and brings that expertise to a more optimal result in these design.

Fyne use compression drivers for their tweeters. If not utilised correctly these can be overly forward and unnatural. However in our listening tests, we have been impressed by their natural rendition of texture and airy high-frequency extension – with no hint of forwardness.

Their mid-bass and bass drivers are made from multi-fibre cones. Natural fibre cones have inherent advantages as they are lightweight and naturally damped from the various separate fibres. Fyne Audio’s drivers are very fast delivering superb dynamics without being forward in presentation, whilst maintaining the natural timbres of instruments and voices.

  • Coupled to the drivers are 2 further unique technologies:

    1. An innovative bass loading system. Bookshelf and floor-standing models from the F500 series up to the flagship F1 employ a downwards firing port system, and the floor-standing models use a twin cavity reflex loading system. This loading system broadens the tuning frequency to reduce cone excursion, and acts as a muffler, blocking standing waves produced by the main internal port. Below the vent in the base of the loudspeaker, the BassTrax™ Tractrix profile diffuser which is used to convert the standard wave energy to an expanding spherical 360-degree wavefront, integrating energy uniformly into the room.
    2. Their FyneFlute™ technology employs a computer-designed, fluted surround to the driver, which minimises reflections back down the cone itself reducing colouration. This improves the drivers resolving power.have upgrades over their non-SP counterparts. All SP models are designed and built in the UK.

Fyne now have an extensive range of speakers but we have decided to focus on their SP or Special Production range that have upgrades over their non-SP counterparts. All SP models are designed and built in the UK.

Fyne Audio SuperTrax and S-Trax super tweeters

Fyne have launched two super tweeters to maximise the performance of their speakers, and those from other brands. Both models use an up firing, omni-directional super tweeter that uses the same type of 360-degree tractrix diffuser that they use to diffuse the bass from the ports at the bottom of their cabinets.

The new units are: the larger and more technically advanced SuperTrax; the smaller and more keenly priced S-Trax.

Super tweeters are designed to couple with an existing speaker to widen its frequency range. The advantages of this, when done correctly, are a more airy, effortless feel to the presentation, a more accurate 3-dimentional sonic image, improved tonal accuracy across the frequency range, and better dynamics. This is possible through the super tweeter’s high frequencies harmonising with lower frequencies from the speaker. It is not just about more life and sparkle in the treble; the effect is heard across the entire bandwidth.

SuperTrax

This is the larger of the two super tweeters and is designed to be time aligned with the Fyne range of loudspeakers. All Fyne speakers have been very accurately measured to recommend the correct position to mount the super tweeter on their cabinets. These measurements are on Fyne’s website, alternatively call to discuss in detail. It is very important to get this time alignment correct, to optimise its effect. This unit can be used with other brands though they will need a recessed tweeter.

Fyne decided to use a 25mm (1-inch) Thin Ply Carbon Diaphragm (TPCD) material for the SuperTrax super tweeter, which has a much higher break up frequency than aluminium, titanium or magnesium which are the more usual metals employed. This means lower distortion and a more extended range – up to 60 kHz. This up-firing driver is then mated to a floating 360-degree tractrix diffuser.

In our listening tests, the results were impressive. This is not a subtle improvement and makes the speaker sound like it is from a much higher model range. We have heard traditional, forward-firing super-tweeters over the years and they tend to create a more “hifi” sound which is not to our taste. Forward firing devices have a very narrow dispersion at these ultrasonic frequencies, which give a beam effect and a small sweet-spot. The 360-degree design of the Fyne SuperTrax means no sweet spot and delivers instead an immersive sound stage, with wider imaging.

The super tweeters when combined with Fyne F501 SP, F502 SP and F702 SP Special Production model, all produce a greatly improved sound. Fyne speakers are already capable of a superb 3-dimensional sound-stage with real depth, one of the reasons they were selected for our portfolio. However, the sense of space and depth increased very clearly with the addition of their SuperTrax. The placement of images in the room was far more accurate. The bass was also tighter, which is not something that is expected from adding a super tweeter for high frequencies.

The SuperTrax has been designed to be used with Fyne speakers utilising their co-axial drivers, where the tweeter is recessed from the front baffle. However it can be used with other brands with recessed tweeters.

For those with more traditional non-recessed tweeters, Fyne have now launched the smaller, S-Trax super tweeter. This mode will work with a wider variety of brands, as the driver can be mounted nearer to the front baffle of the speaker for more accurate time-alignment. This newer unit employs a magnesium dome but with a similar, floating, tractrix diffuser as the SuperTrax.

Fyne incorporate a sensitivity dial on both models to help match that of the speakers, which gives control of in-room volume. The output level can be tuned to taste and to the location.

In short, these are both superb products, which is capable of delivering profound sonic improvements to any loudspeaker.

S-Trax super tweeter

For those with more traditional non-recessed, baffle mounted, tweeters, including Fyne’s entry level (non-coaxial) offerings, Fyne have now launched the smaller, more affordable, S-Trax super tweeter. This will work with all Fyne Audio loudspeakers but also with a wider variety of other brands, as the driver can be mounted nearer to the front baffle of the speaker, for more accurate time-alignment with more traditional speaker construction.

This is a smaller of their two super tweeter options, offering the same 360-degree dispersion. This, again, is facilitated through an up-firing driver, with a floating Tractrix diffuser.

The S-Trax uses a magnesium driver, which keeps costs down compared to the TPCD diaphragm used in the SuperTrax.

The unit also has a sensitivity dial to facilitate the most seamless integration with any loudspeaker.

F702 SP (Special Production)

This is a medium to large floor-stander with a very distinctive curved cabinet with plinth with outrigger feet with integrated BassTrax diffuser. The cabinet itself is made from pressed birch ply. This is known for its stiffness and is considered one of the very best building materials for loudspeaker cabinets. This is further heavily braced at critical points.

Drivers – the 702 SP employs the same 8 inch IsoFlare™ coaxial mid/high frequency driver from their reference F1 series. This utilises a more refined high frequency waveguide that offers a smoother and more refined performance than the standard 702 driver. This is coupled to an additional multifibre 8 inch bass driver.

Crossover – The SP version takes the standard 702 crossover to a new level. This circuitry has been optimised through computational modelling and extensive listening tests and now offers the crossover quality of their reference F1 series. It features high grade Claritycap capacitors and Neotech PC-OCC wiring for transparent signal transfer. Gold-plated WBT Nextgen 0703 terminals and a proprietary cryogenic treatment process ensure maximum performance. The F702SP stands on a heavyweight aluminium platform with M12 threaded support cones for additional stability.

In our listening tests we found this speaker to be highly articulate and spacious with a very accurate tonal balance. The sound stage was extremely holographic, one of the best we have heard from any loudspeaker brand. Very deep as well as wide, beyond the boundaries of the cabinets. Bass response has real impact and texture, without being overly forced.
